Hakuin Zenji’s 100 Demons Scroll
The 18th century Zen master, Hakuin Ekaku, created a series of paintings known as “100 Demons” as a practice of connecting with and depicting his inner monsters, delusions, and challenges. Painted in vivid images they depicted the Hyakki Yagyō, or "Night Parade of 100 demons/creatures," of Japanese folklore.
Rather than pushing away the monstrous within himself, Hakuin gave it form—playful, grotesque, and honest—transforming them into an opportunity for compassion and insight. Since then other artists, practitioners and teachers (such as the comic book author, Lynda Barry) have used this as a practice of creative self-discovery.
In this session, we will begin with a period of guided meditation to support us in recognizing, personifying and listening to one of our inner demons, we will then have the opportunity to give creative expression to our demons, struggles, fears, and delusions and challenges through paper, marker, pen, crayon or pencil.
Perhaps together we will create our own 100 demons night parade!
No artistic experience needed! Just curiosity, compassion, and a willingness to experiment.
Paper and art supplies will be provided but feel free to bring your own.
This session will be led by Kisei and Seth, and offered by dānā (donation).
